WordPress Ate My Blog + Some Foodie Etiquette

August 26th, 2009

Whew! Ok everyone. Let me explain my awful blogging etiquette. I finally decided to take the leap and upgrade my wonderful WordPress blogging platform. What I did not count on however, was that it would be an excruciatingly painful process, resulting in the complete annihilation of my blog – AH!

Thankfully, like the smart little blogger I am, I backed up most of my files (back up your files!!!), and I was able to restore HBS to almost good as new condition. So I apologize for the bizarre design changes some of you may have recently seen and the lack of posts, but HBS is now back to full blogging capacity, and it’s back to blogging about scrumdidliumptious foodie treats!

Today’s blog bite of choice swerves more towards foodie etiquette than foodie consumption. I stumbled upon a question the other day that piqued my interest and wanted to hear your folks’ take on the matter. As an aspiring hostess (yes, I did say aspiring, as I do not yet have the means to hostess to my full potential), when a guest brings over a bottle of wine, should it be opened immediately? What if there are already a few bottles open on the table, still open the guest’s bottle to be polite? Or is it assumed that this bottle is a gift to the hostess, and need not be opened?

What’s your take?

Food, Inc.

June 9th, 2009

If you’re a food lover (and I know you are), then I’m sure you’ve heard about the upcoming documentary, ”Food, Inc.”  The film that ”lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA.”

Yikes, right?  Check out the trailer below:

The film features interviews with food big-wigs like Michael Pollan (Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food) and Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), in addition to many other forward-thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield’s Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms’ Joel Salatin.

The film opens in San Fran, NY, and LA on June 12th, and will continue to plow across the nation thereafter; leaving a mess of controversy in its wake, no doubt. Check out when it will be coming to a city near you here.

This Is Why You’re Fat

April 10th, 2009

Ok, so I don’t mean to be constantly posting about large quantities of heart-attack inducing food, but I can’t help the fact that disgusting food is absolutely fascinating. Correction, totally delicious food that is likely to kill you is both fascinating AND horrifying. It’s like watching the “Saw” movies – you really don’t want to watch, but you just can’t seem to tear your eyes away.

So, the latest find?

This is Why You're Fat

Yes, I’m totally serious. This site is the essence of the American people. It touts concoctions like “The Homewrecker” (a fifteen-inch deep-fried hot dog topped with jalapenos, habanero chili sauce, coleslaw, diced tomatoes and a mound of cheese), “The Snack Pizza Bomb” (a pizza topped with french fries, sliced corn dogs, popcorn chicken, and doritos), and a “Corn Dog Casserole” (layers of hash brown patties, crumbled bacon, baked beans, corn, and french fries, topped with a layer of corn dog slices and mustard icing).

My fave?

The Taco Town Taco

The Taco Town Taco

This gargantuan taco is modeled after an SNL skit. A crunchy beef taco with nacho cheese, lettuce, tomato and southwestern sauce wrapped in a soft flour tortilla with a layer of refried beans between, then wrapped in a corn tortilla with a layer of Monterey Jack cheese in between, then a deep fried gordita shell with guacamole sauce baked in a corn husk topped with pico de gallo, wrapped in a crepe, filled with egg, griere cheese, sausage and portobello mushrooms, all wrapped in a Chicago-style deep dish pizza, wrapped in a blueberry pancake and finally, deep fried with spicy vegetarian chili dipping sauce.

Hm… Never would have thought to combine blueberry pancakes and refried beans…

If this doesn’t satisfy your craving for horrifyingly high-calorie food, check out their site. They just got a book deal too, so if you think one of your concoctions is print-worthy, send ‘em a pic!
